Today's condo walk-through

...of not our condo. Unfortunately, when AC and I arrived for our walk-through today, the lead sales woman informed us that our walk-through had been rescheduled. Apparently, they sent us a letter (just checked the mailbox - no letter) and left a message probably at my old job. Geez. Apparently, people were either getting 5 phone calls informing them about the change and other people like us heard nothing. So I pulled out my pathetic smile and asked sweetly if we could just go over to the building and take a peek. So we got a walk-through of a - one floor below ours. Here's a few pictures just to give you a taste.

The lobby - they are still painting so no judging on color...yet!

Elevators on the first floor

First view from the front door - we got all wood floors instead of carpet and tile

The kitchen - we got black granite and slightly lighter colored wood cabinets. Love the recessed lighting!

Family Room with background views of DC

View from the balcony via the bedroom - if you squint, you can see Washington Monument. We will probably have that view for a year or so.

Bedroom

Bathroom - the only room that should look exactly the same.

Our walk-through will be sometime next week instead. oh well. Time to see Borat!

Oh NO! I'm sure you were SO disappointed - but at least you did get to see something. I hope your ACTUAL walk-through is soon - and that you enjoy Borat!

Things I noticed:

1) there is no superplunger in the bathroom, so no, it doesn't look exactly like yours will (or should.) I hope AC realizes that as a homeowner he will have to do his own dirty work :)

2) Recessed lighting looks awesome and pretty much is awesome, but it can drive your power bill through the roof. Where you now have between 100 and 200 watts of lighting in your kitchen, you'll probably have 600-800 in your new kitchen (#bulbs x wattage.) Put in a dimmer switch so you don't always have to eat up the juice.

3) Speaking of juice, don't let the plasma sit on when you're not watching it. It takes 3-4X the power to run a 42" plasma that it does to run a 27" CRT.

I checked your blog thinking there may be pictures of your place and here it is...even if kind of not your place. Maybe I have horrible taste, but I really like the bright yellow in the lobby. It looks so modern!

I think your place will look even nicer with the changes you said you'd made over this place. Having all wood floors will make the whole place look more open and larger than breaking it up with carpet and tile. I wouldn't worry too much about your electric bill...we were so concerned when we moved to our house...it wasn't nearly as bad as we had expected. I doubt your new lighting will be that bad 'cause the whole place is new and probably energy efficient in your appliances and things. Also, you won't have to do THAT much in a condo. I do miss how when something would break, we could call the association and someone would fix it and they would pay. Awesome. Condo living with a good association is kind of like being an apartment that you can actually change without asking and not have to change back in a year or two! And then at the end of the year you get back part of your interest!

The lighting and TV have little to do with energy efficiency, though the bill impacts may be negated by improvements in the efficiency of other appliances. In our last house I figured out how much the 12 cans in the kitchen were costing us per hour and we started using the dimmer switch alot.

Yeah, the point I was making was about the other appliances negating the cans, not that the cans would be energy efficient.

Anyway, a dimmer switch is always a good idea anyway...it's so much nicer to be able to control the amount of light.

I definitely agree that dimmer switches for those lights are the way to go. My parents have frequently installed them in the many houses they've owned. Not only are they a power saver, but they are a great way to add mood lighting :)

Good point about the tv but we've made it a habit to only keep the tv on when we are actively watching it.

And Lori, I agree..I kind of like the yellow..it's cheery!

Thanks everyone for all the compliments :) We really can't believe that we are like 99% there!
